When does the new library in Cedar Hill Open

If you have talked to me at all in the last 3 months, it probably took about 3 minutes for me to bring up the new library opening in Cedar Hill. About a year and a half ago I moved to the South Dallas area.  When I saw the sign for the new library coming, you best believe my book loving heart did a little happy dance!

So when does the new Cedar Hill library open

The new Traphene Hickman Library will have its grand opening on Saturday April 27th at 9am, only 4 days away as I write….but who’s counting.  I have driven by the address 450 Pioneer Trail, Cedar Hill, TX 75104 a few times, and let me tell you all the new building is GORGEOUS!

Why should I attend the new library opening

Now maybe you are not an avid reader like me, and the opening of a new library is something that would not normally go on your calendar.  Well, the Traphene Hickman library opening, is not only about books (which are amazing). The library is nestled in a park with a walkable trail and the Cedar Hill Museum is also celebrating it’s opening the same day.  A one mile fun run is planned, there will be live music, giveaways, food trucks, and so much more!

reasons to visit and support your local public library

In case you are still not convinced, here are some more reasons to visit and support your local public library.

#1 FREE ENTERTAINMENT it’s free! Technically it’s paid for by taxes and grants, but where else can you find legit free entertainment?

#2 FREE RESOURCES It’s not just books. While it hurts my soul that some people don’t love to read, the modern library is not only about books. Story times are hosted for young children. Workshops are hosted for small business owners. It is a place to connect and build community to fight the loneliness epidemic. There are so many services the library offers.

#3 FREE BOOKS Of course if you love to read, where else can you get free books. I say all the time that if I bought every book I read I would be flat broke. Yes, support authors by buying their books….and you can show support them by also requesting the book at your local library

#4 SOCIAL EVENTS Did you know that the library hosts social events? Sometimes also for FREE! Earlier this year, the Zula B library hosted this charcuterie board making class at the Cedar Hill Recreation Center.  All of the supplies were included for free. Yes I said free 99.  I had the BEST time at this event. And I can’t wait for the new fabulous events that will be hosted in the new space.

#5 EVENT SPACE RENTALS Speaking of events, do you need a space to host your workshop, meeting, baby shower, or book club? The library has meeting spaces you can rent out often at very affordable rates.  And shameless plug; if you happen to need an event photographer, I would love to photograph your celebration.

#6 ARTS AND CRAFTS  Arts and crafts are not just for kids.  Have you heard of a makerspace? Many libraries have spaces to learn all sorts of crafts like sewing, painting, some even have 3D printers.  Kids, adults, and teens can all find a way to express their creativity.

#7 COMMUNITY A huge thread you may have noticed in all these reasons is community. The library has always been my happy place.  A place to go and connect with other readers, get great recommendations from librarians, enjoy a little peace and quiet, study, journal, or get some serotonin from the beautiful bookish displays.

#8 SERVE It is a great place to volunteer! Need community service hours, or simply want to give back? The library offers a plethora of opportunities to serve

#9 TECHNOLOGY The libraries provide great access to technology! Depending on your library, you could have access to computers, printing services, or even tablets and  laptops you can check out and take home

#10 FUN like Arthur told us, having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!

These are only a few of the many many reasons your local library is a fabulous resource.

What other libraries can i visit with the new cedar hill library being closed?

If you can’t wait until the new library opens Saturday, you can get your library fix at other libraries in the greater southwest: Desoto public library, Duncanville public library, and Lancaster public library. One thing I love about the greater southwest libraries is that they all have trails or parks close by so if you enjoy a good audiobook, after picking up your selections on hold you can take a stroll around Armstrong park, and listen to your favorite book. I recommend These Silent Woods, The  House of Eve, Women of Good Fortune. You know there’s no way I could write a post about the library without sneaking in a few of my recent reads ;)

Will you be going to the Traphene Hickman Library Grand Opening? I hope to see you there. I’ll be the girl with the ginormous smile on my face and probably a few books in my hand!
